Have you ever played in a poker tournament? I have a friend who is a regular competitor in big money poker competitions and it certainly sounds like a strange world out there. He can be playing upwards of 5 hours on one game! That’s a hell of a long time to be playing, as a result he can’t leave his house for the whole night, till either he’s won or lost! If an emergency comes up, he’s screwed, there’s no way he’ll get his money back, he just had to keep going all in and risk it. Today I’d like to devote this gambling blog to one of the legends of poker, Stu “The Kid” Ungar. One of the few true poker geniuses of our times. Ungar is one of only two people to have won the WSOP main event three times. Ungar began playing Gin Rummy from a very young age as his father was a loan shark who owned a gambling den. After Ungar’s father died in 1966, he got caught up with mob boss and brilliant card player, Victor Romano. Romano became his mentor and Ungar enjoyed protection from vengeful gamblers.
Before online poker, any serious player headed to Las Vegas to live the life of a gambler, Ungar was no different and in 1977, he left New York to find fame and fortune in Sin City. His reputation as a Gin player was so notorious, casinos would beg him not to play in their tournaments as players would refuse to join if they heard he was playing.
In 1980 Ungar entered the WSOP and he trounced the competition with such ease, it was as if he were playing free poker. Ungar was dubbed ‘“The Kid” for his short stature and youthful looks. In 1981 he defended his title and won again, despite being banned for spitting in the face of the dealer after losing a large pot. Read more…
